Ta Plats!/Take Place!
Yellow, yellow and more yellow. Monochrome book to compromise a project about art and accessibility.
The project Ta Plats/Take Place is about art and accessibility. The material we got was comprehensive and of very varying quality collected during the five years of the project. We decided early on that we wanted to make a small but very thick book with a quiet cover in contrast to a noisy inlay. It ended up almost like a building block or a brick from the yellow brick road in the Wizard of Oz.
We realised the book was a child magnet as visiting kids repeatedly went straight to it and pick it up.
Matching the yellow front and endpapers, head and tail band, coloured sides and cover material was a challenge that required a range of different suppliers. We made a blind embossing of the title on the cover.
To our embarrassment, we realised that Irma Boom, the world’s best book designer, had already made a monochrome yellow book. We’ll pretend that this one its little brother.
