Daido Moriyama: A Diary

Hasselblad Foundation

The story behind

In conjunction with the Hasselblad Award 2019 there is a catalogue published. We loved the brief for this project from the photograper himself: »Make it cool«.

Review of the book: Daido Moriyama is undoubtedly one of the most acclaimed Japanese photographers in the world. […] It is therefore quite natural that the Hasselblad Foundation decided to award him as the recipient of the 2019 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography.[…] it seems here that there was a real desire to create a powerful full-fledge creative photo book which in my opinion would be able to compete with some of the great ones in the bibliography of the photographer and in any case we are in the presence of one of his most interesting and superbly edited photo books in recent years.[…] We find here a deep willingness to experiment in terms of design and editing with very old photos mixed with more recent ones, known and unpublished photos, photos from Japan and others shot elsewhere… An interesting expertly-crafted visual cocktail that works wonderfully and gives to Moriyama a second youth

A great success largely due to the talent of Louise Wolthers and co-curator Sara Walker who created this nervous and at the same time precise editing and sequencing in collaboration with the designer BankerWessel finally validated by Moriyama, which makes this book one of his most exhilarating of recent years!Excerpt from review by Maki of Photobooks collectors. https://www.shashasha.co/en/artist/maki
